The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society is the group over Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Awake and Watchtower magazines having been notable Watchtower publications for public distribution. This is a helpful compilation shared in late April 2006, and it includes many helpful links for additional information. It contains both the good and the bad as no individual or leadership organization is perfect. Feel free to copy and distribute it in whole or part.

This publication was started by underground Jehovah’s Witnesses who wished and still wish to remain anonymous due to fear of reprisal. A copy was posted and or sent to many people. Therefore, although I cannot provide any names of compilers, I would add that there are references or internet links to substantiate a vast amount of the material and any hearsay without such references and links has the needed wording “alleged” or “allegation” for clarification.

The intent for myself and doubtlessly others in sharing this is, beyond the obvious historical reasons, that it shall prove helpful in keeping more Jehovah’s Witnesses alive, well and able to come to greater happiness in view of what reputable media has had to say of the Watchtower Society’s treatment of them. For example JWs about to move into another JW congregation will have a better chance of learning beforehand some of its past and thus be better able to watch out for their children and themselves.

PHOENIX: A Jehovah’s Witness congregation hall in northwest Phoenix was torched December 25, 2003, resulting in an estimated $1.2 million in damages. Bob Khan, an assistant fire chief for the Phoenix Fire Department, said investigators determined arson but without an established motive and onvestigators for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives would assist. “You take it personal because it’s your building; it’s your house of worship,” said Bob Reyna of Sun City. Four former members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses have filed a lawsuit in Superior Court, contending they were sexually abused by a church official in Sonoma County during the 1980s and the church covered up the crime. The lawsuit names two Sonoma County congregations of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Donald L. Glew, a former church leader in Santa Rosa and Petaluma who was convicted in 1989 of four counts of child molestation. Glew, now 52, was sentenced to 14 years in prison. He started molesting two of the plaintiffs when they were infants and the other alleged victims were 1 and 5 years old when Glew started molesting them, according to the complaint filed Feb 9, 2004, the suit alleges.

“He was someone vested with authority,” said Bill Brelsford, a Sacramento attorney who represents the four plaintiffs, identified only by their first names in the 22-page complaint although top JW attorney Phillip Brumley said Glew was never a church official based on preliminary investigation and the church isn’t responsible for Glew’s actions. Similar lawsuits have been filed in six other Northern California counties, including Napa, Santa Clara, Monterey and Yolo. According to the Sonoma County lawsuit, Glew became a “ministerial servant” in the Jehovah’s Witnesses in the late 1970s. He molested the four plaintiffs, two boys and two girls, between 1982 and 1988, according to the lawsuit. Other church leaders learned Glew was molesting children as early as 1980, the suit says, but they took no action to stop him and they prohibited the victims’ families from reporting the crimes to police.

According to the suit, the church “engaged in a systematic pattern and practice of suppression of information to cover up and hide incidents of child molestation from law enforcement and their membership.” Glew now lives in San Mateo County. Pat Garza: I’m Pat Garza, and I’m here to say that I was raped by Theodore Jaracz (explanatory note: Jaracz is on the worldwide Governing Body of JWs) when I was a little girl, I was living in Los Angeles, he was the District Servant. There are two boys; their initials are “M.D.” and “M.W.”, if they - if I could find them – they’re older than me, they were there, there were witnesses! We were terrified and silenced! We were not allowed to talk. My life was threatened and my brothers, were threatened, they were going to be killed if I spoke.And when I started remembering the abuse I was abused horrifically in the congregation and I wrote the Watchtower Society and I begged for help, I have the letters with me to show you the names of ten of the elders who hurt me and they told me they could not answer any of the questions I asked, nor could they comment on the circumstances that I described in the congregation.

I ended up in the hospital, in crisis in the emergency ward because of what the elders did to me. And then I was hospitalized for months, because I had nowhere to go, I was homeless. They threw me out in the street, I was destitute and I was disabled, I was unable to work because of the flashbacks I was having. And I ended up on the street, and I have with me a photocopy of the letter that the elders, the entire body of elders sent me, it has all of their names on it. It says that they called the Watchtower Society here in New York, and asked how to help me and they sent me a list of homeless shelters and I have that list of homeless shelters, one of them was Parkside Projects on skid row in Portland Oregon. Two of them were *** Beaverton Oregon and the other was the YWCA. The humiliation that I felt was beyond belief. I almost died when I got that letter from those elders, and I almost stopped praying.

The Watchtower Society has stood as a block between children and your God. All they do is destroy a person’s faith and hope and make us feel like God does not love us. MOUNT SHASTA: Don and Kim Clemens of Mount Shasta, California, say that in 1996 their son accused his babysitter, Alizum Varium—a neighbor and a fellow Witness—of molesting him frequently for six years, beginning when he was 5 years old. The family informed local Witness leaders. “It was my son’s words against her words,” Kim Clemens remembers. “The elders filed it away and said there’s nothing they can do.” When the Clemens family saw Varium volunteering at a daycare center, they hired a private investigator to gather information. “Our goal is to keep her completely away from all kids,” Kim Clemens says. “If there are more children who come out of there having been abused, I don’t want to say 15 or 20 years down the road that I didn’t say anything.”

SACRAMENTO VICINITY (Loomis, Rocklin, Sunset Congregations): Derek Packowski and the Watchtower Society corporations were sued in November 2003 by the legal firm of Nolen Saul Brelsford of Sacramento, California. The child molestor and corporations headed by the Governing Body over Jehovah’s Witnesses, were charged with not reporting to law enforcement and systematically conspiring and suppressing information about sexual molestation committed by

Packowski when he was in a congregation in Des Plaines, Illinois, also after about 1984 and later in California at the Loomis Congregation from which formed the Rocklin and Sunset Congregations.

At Loomis and Sunset congregations he was allowed unsupervised interaction with children including plaintiffs Tim C, Robert C, Andrew C and Trevor L about 1986-1998. Later as a Ministerial Servant

he was allowed unsupervised contact with congregation children. Defendants routinely maintained secret archival files regarding sexual abuse by Elders, Ministerial Servants, Pioneers, and other

SAN DIEGO: the Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center in 2003 began a bloodless medicine program, and Miguel Salas (32), a Jehovah’s Witness with cancer of the testicles, became a participant. Some involved doctors have been Dr Marilyn Norton (oncologist) and Dr Hugo Barrera. Miguel felt the treated went fine for himself. Doctor Barrera said bloodless medicine patients fared very well in general but with a chance they might desperately need blood and not accept it, that most hospitals have bloodless medicine tools but without a coordinated program. Police looking for accused child molester “In San Diego, police are searching for a child molester they say has been abusing children for decades and he found his victims through church. His name is Frederick McClean. He’s 55-years old. Police say that in one case, he molested a girl 100 times, beginning when she was 5 years old and lasting 7 years. “His preferred age of his victim was from 6 or 7 years old to 12 years old. WOODLAND: Plaintiffs Daniel West and Steve and Amber Pence alleged Watchtower Defendants knew of sexual abuse yet failed to report complaints to law enforcement officials or remove the offending leaders from interaction with children, threatened victims with punishment if they warned others and, in at least one case, accused of homosexual activity, which violates church policy.

The action followed a previous criminal case by the state against Timothy Silva of Woodland who in 2001 pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious conduct against Shane Pence, one of the three

plaintiffs, who was a minor when the abuse and the plea occurred. The Woodland Congregation of JWs was also named a defendant. Elder Paul Pfotenhauer said said Silva was publicly reproved but not

The lawsuit alleges JW leaders were told West had been molested from 1991, when he was 13 years old, through 1993 but did not notify authorities nor take steps to hold (Silva) accountable and exacerbated the trauma to West by accusing him “of participating in homosexual activity.” Also alleged were that Shane Pence was 7 years old when Silva “committed continued and repeated sexual battery” on the boy 5 years until 1997, his mother reported the abuse to the Watchtower defendants and was told not to contact the police herself, that the church would take care of the problem. The only other named, living perpetrator in the four lawsuits filed last week is convicted child molester James Henderson of Red Bluff, who, Brelsford said, is alleged to have molested then-15-year-old plaintiff “Tim W.” in 1994. The parents are also accused of aggravated battery against their 8-year-old son. Authorities and neighbors say the parents were so strict with their 6 children (ages 8-17) they isolated them from playing with other neighborhood kids.

The children could not locate a missing credit card, and the parents beat Laree with the 3/4 inch because upset over the card as well as her not having done and put away laundry, even having the other

children pull off her pants to do so on her stomach and chest, stuff a rag in her mouth to silence the screams. Laree was pronounced dead at South Shore Hospital hours later and the death penalty may be asked as the case involves torture. The parents had no previous criminal history. The Jehovah’s Witness parents were strong believers in the Bible mandating corporal punishment but the children’s uncle Leon Slack said it was not a religious but a family tragedy. A tall fence enclosed the residence and neighbor Noel Chapa said “The only time I saw them all together was one Saturday when they were going to church. WATERLOO OR AREA: The Iowa Supreme Court reinstated a malpractice lawsuit by a Jehovah’s Witness Lester Campbell against Waterloo’s Covenant Medical Center hospital and Dr Arnold Delbridge who allegedly gave the man a blood transfusion despite warnings that it violated his religious beliefs. Justices said Campbell did not have to have an expert witness to establish fault or how much money might be awarded in damages. The lawsuit had been dismissed by the trial court. Campbell’s lawyers said the case was a first in Iowa. Campbell sued after he underwent routine knee surgery and was given his own blood. Campbell claimed there was a communication breakdown and blamed it on hospital workers and a mix-up in patient charts. Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Linda Pisano told jurors that on two separate occasions in early 1998 the girl was attending services at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Amherst and left to use the rest room. Pisano said on returning to the main room, Bias was at the doorway, reached out, hugged her and put his hands on her buttocks, Pisano said. She froze then went to her seat both times. She said his actions were unwanted but defense attorney Thomas Estes, from the Committee for Public Counsel Services in Northampton said she did not tell Bias to remove his hands and ”had no reaction at all.” He added 2 JWs have the job of standing next to the door at the hall; Bias had this job ‘on different occasions.’ The incidents were dealt with by the JWs and Bias told police he thought he had satisfied their discipline

HOLLIS: (Note by compiler: Gregory Blackstock was a Jehovah’s Witness pedophile from Hollis or possibly previously Lowell, Massachusetts whose victims included some children of Jehovah’s Witnesses) Meaning of Girls’ ‘Privates’ Disputed By Andrew Wolfe, Telegraph Staff wolfea@telegraph-nh.com Nahua – A Hollis man asked a judge Thursday to throw out his conviction for molesting twin sisters, arguing the 10-year-old girls weren’t specific enough when they testified that he touched their “privates.” Gregory Blackstock, 45, formerly of 68 Flint Pond Drive, also argued that prosecutors failed to prove he acted with the purpose of sexual gratification. Blackstock was found guilty of three counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault July 26 after a trial in Hillsborough County Superior Court. If Judge William Groff upholds his conviction, Blackstock is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 25. Groff did not immediately rule on the issue after hearing arguments Thursday. If Groff overturns Blackstock’s convictions, prosecutors could seek to appeal his ruling, or request a new trial. On the other hand, Blackstock could argue that the case should be dismissed, and that double jeopardy bars the state from trying him again. Blackstock is currently serving a five- to 10-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old East Kingston girl in that town. He also faces trial next month on charges that he sexually assaulted a Hollis girl, now 17, between 1989 and 1996. Blackstock was convicted of molesting the twin girls between October 1998 and June 1999 at his mother’s home in Hollis. Blackstock met the girls and their family while living in East Kingston and attending the same Jehovah’s Witness congregation as they. He became close with the family and lived with them for a time. The alleged assaults took place while the girls visited him in Hollis. The girls, who are now 10, both testified during the trial that Blackstock had touched their “privates.” The girls drew circles on an anatomically correct drawing to indicate the area to which they were referring. Blackstock’s lawyer, Paul Garrity, argued that evidence wasn’t enough to prove sexual contact with their genitalia. “They circled an area on the body that encompassed stomach, groin, legs and genitalia,” Garrity said. Assistant County Attorney Roger Chadwick disagreed, saying the drawings were somewhat more specific. In any case, he argued, the term “privates” is unambiguous. “We’re dealing with a very specific term, commonly used to refer to the genitalia,” Chadwick said. “Common sense seems to rule out any question as to where a 10-year-old girl . . . means when she says ‘privates,’ ” Chadwick wrote in his response to Blackstock’s motion. “If you were to look up from this paper and see someone stumble into your room, bent at the waist and complaining of having been kicked in the ‘privates,’ would you, could you, have any doubt as to where they had been harmed?” In making their arguments, Chadwick and Garrity cited two previous state Supreme Court rulings. In a 1997 case, the court upheld a conviction based in part on testimony by the victim, who said she was touched in her “privates,” and used a stuffed bunny to point out what she meant. In a 1989 case, the Supreme Court upheld Groff’s decision to overturn the sexual assault conviction of a Lowell, Mass., man, because the victim testified that the man “stuck his fingers in my bum.” The court found the word “bum” was too ambiguous to prove sexual penetration. Garrity argued the situation in Blackstock’s case was akin to the 1989 case, while Chadwick likened it to the more recent case. Garrity also charged that prosecutors failed to prove that Blackstock acted for sexual gratification, as state law requires in such cases. Prosecutors offered no evidence of the circumstances surrounding the alleged assaults – not even whether they happened at the same or different times, Garrity said. For all the jury knew, Blackstock could have stumbled into the girls by accident, or touched them while he was sleeping, Garrity said. “You can’t infer criminal intent from no evidence,” Garrity said. “They presented no evidence of the circumstances surrounding this touching. “It’s like this hand in the Addams Family, floating in the ozone,” he said. Chadwick countered that the simple fact both girls were assaulted rules out an accident, and shows that the touching was purposeful. Blackstock’s case already has produced other noteworthy legal rulings. Before the trial, Groff ruled that Blackstock couldn’t be sentenced under the state’s “three strikes” rape law, because he committed all of the alleged offenses before he was charged with any of them. Some judges have interpreted the law differently, and the state Supreme Court has yet to decide the issue. In another pretrial ruling, Groff found that elders in Blackstock’s Jehovah’s Witness congregation couldn’t be made to testify about his statements to them because of the “religious privilege” rule, which holds that religious leaders can’t be required to disclose a confession or other statements made in confidence in their capacity as spiritual advisers. Gregory Blackstock, 45, is scheduled to go to trial next Monday on charges he molested two East Kingston sisters. Even without the admissions to elders at his Jehovah’s Witness congregation, prosecutors say there’s enough evidence to bring the case to trial. The state wanted to subpoena a minister and elders from Blackstock’s congregation to testify about meetings at which they discussed the allegations. Judge William Groff ruled last week the meetings were confidential and protected by religious privilege. Blackstock faces eight counts of rape, punishable by up to 20 years in prison. He has been jailed since October, when he was convicted in Rockingham County Superior Court on a charge involving another girl in East Kingston. In Hillsborough County, Blackstock is charged with assaulting two East Kingston sisters at his home in Hollis between June 1996 and October 1998, and with assaulting a Hollis girl at his home at various times between September 1989 and June 1996. The two cases are to be tried separately, the first next Monday and the second on June 25. Hillsborough County Attorney Roger Chadwick had argued that Blackstock’s discussions with the elders does not qualify under the confessional privilege, because the elders also discussed Blackstock’s statements with the girls’ mother. They got $412,500. Attorney Alvin A. Wolff Jr. represented Grissom’s family. Dr. Victoria Dorr, a hematologist at St. Anthony’s, had told the jury that Grissom would have survived if she had accepted blood transfusions. Philip Willman, who was representing Gaskin, argued it was unfair to blame the doctor in the death, when the woman had rejected blood transfusions. Anaconda — A former Jehovah’s Witnesses’ church elder sentenced in 2003 for bilking over $7 million from a 100-year-old Deer Lodge woman’s trust estate will make an appeal for freedom at a parole hearing Thursday. After less than three years behind bars, Darryl K. Willis, 66, of Helena, has served enough of his 25-year sentence with 10 suspended to apply for parole in what prosecutors called the biggest theft case in Montana history. Earlier this month, parole was denied for Willis’ accomplice, former elder Dale A. Erickson, 56, of Missoula. The board not only denied Erickson’s bid for freedom, but told him he’s staying under lock and key for three more years before another review would be allowed. Una Anderson, who died last year at the age of 103, lost her life savings and a 6,400-acre family ranch near Jens in an elaborate befriend-and-betray scheme perpetrated by the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ elders who were subsequently “disfellowshipped,’’ according to church leaders. The money is still missing, and only about $400 of the court-ordered $7.15 million in restitution has been paid back, authorities said. After allegedly convincing Anderson that entrusting her fortune to them was in keeping with her religious beliefs, the pair used a complex system of interlocking companies and trusts to drain Anderson’s accounts, while they lived in expensive homes, drove luxury cars and hosted trips abroad to places like Europe and the Caribbean, records show. They also made numerous loans, large and small, to church and family members, records show, and charged Anderson a $400,000 brokerage fee for illegally and secretly selling her ranch. The scheme was reported in 2001 to Adult Protective Services social worker Janel Pliley by a relative who noticed that something was amiss at the Anderson household that appeared to be taken over by church people, records show. As the scheme progressed, Anderson became influenced by other church members who became more involved and controlling in Anderson’s care and daily life, court records show. At a sentencing hearing, Pliley testified that Anderson was “under watch’’ 24 hours a day. “She was basically a prisoner in her own house,’’ Pliley told the court. Meanwhile, Anderson’s savings from nearly a century of frugal living disappeared. Powell County attorney Chris Miller and Sheriff Scott Howard will attend the hearing at the Montana State Prison where Willis is an inmate, and asked the parole board to deny his request.
